Working remotely from Maui: what to check before you book

The idea of working remotely from Maui feels pretty dreamy: log off, and the beach is a short drive away. This is an actual perk, and a few key details can help determine how smoothly your workday goes:

  • A 9 a.m. meeting in New York starts at 3 a.m. here in summer
  • Video calls need a connection you can count on
  • The afternoon sun has a way of finding your screen

Here’s how to plan around them, along with a few of our South Maui rentals that are well set up for a working stay.

Can you work remotely from Maui?

Of course you can, as long as your schedule and your accommodations both support it. Maui suits remote workers on Pacific-time teams, people whose jobs are mostly asynchronous, and anyone comfortable starting work around 6 or 7 a.m. It’s a harder fit for meeting-heavy roles on East Coast schedules, where the workday can begin in the middle of the night.

Your rental is the other half of the equation: a reliable connection and a comfortable place to work for eight hours make every workday easier.

What time is it in Hawaii compared with the mainland?

Hawaii stays on Hawaii Standard Time (UTC-10) all year because the state doesn’t observe daylight saving time. The clock on Maui never moves forward or back, but the gap with the mainland changes by 1 hour twice a year. From the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November, Maui is three hours behind Pacific time and six hours behind Eastern. For the rest of the year, the gap narrows to two and five hours. In 2026, mainland clocks fall back on November 1. (Current Hawaii time and offsets)

Here’s what a mainland 9-to-5 looks like in Maui time:

  • Pacific time, March to early November: 6 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Pacific time, November to early March: 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Eastern time, March to early November: 3 a.m. to 11 a.m.
  • Eastern time, November to early March: 4 a.m. to noon

Pacific-time workers get their afternoons off. On an Eastern team, try moving status updates to written check-ins and condensing real-time meetings late in the East Coast day. A 2 p.m. Eastern call starts at 8 a.m. on Maui in summer and 9 a.m. in winter.

What makes a Maui rental work for a workday?

A good working stay comes down to a dependable connection and a few good places to settle in. Our rentals are vacation homes and condos rather than offices, so instead of a fixed desk you’ll find indoor and outdoor tables and comfortable seating throughout. Take the early stand-up at the dining table, answer email from the sofa, and move to the lanai when you want the breeze, or back inside when the afternoon sun reaches your screen…you get the idea.

Our team knows how each property is set up, so you can ask where to work or how the internet is set up at any of our rentals before you book. These three spots work especially well for a working stay:

Palms at Wailea 2201

Set up at the dining table, the kitchen island or the living room sofa in this two-bedroom, gorgeous Wailea complex. When you want fresh air, the oversized private lanai opens off both the living room and the primary bedroom and looks out over the gardens. The second bedroom gives you a door to close for calls, every room has its own split air conditioning. WiFi included, of course.

Mana Kai 514

This oceanfront condo at the Mana Kai Resort includes high-speed internet and a laptop-friendly space. The open living area gives you several spots to choose from: the dining table, the sofa, or the private lanai facing the Pacific and the neighboring islands. Glass doors let in the breeze, split AC cools each bedroom and the living room, and the second bedroom works for calls. In whale season, keep an eye on the water between (and during) meetings!

Hale Maui Nō Ka ʻOi

For a team offsite or a family with more than one person working, this rare and remarkable gated beachfront estate in South Kihei spreads six suites across two levels, several with their own entrance, kitchen or living space. Here, everyone can find a quiet spot for a call or work session. Work from the Orchid Suite’s reading nook, one of the private outdoor dining areas or the oceanfront lanai, then take the beach path when you log off.

Are there coworking spaces on Maui?

A few, and they’re a nice option for a change of scene. In Kihei, Cohana operates in the Maui Research & Technology Center on Lipoa Parkway, offering day passes, dedicated desks and a conference room. Standard access runs during daytime business hours, so call ahead to confirm current hours and day-pass availability.

What should you confirm before booking a Maui workation?

  • Your meeting times converted to Hawaii time for your travel dates
  • A rental with comfortable spots to work and a quiet room for calls
  • A rental car, so a coworking day or beach break is an easy drive away
  • A coworking day pass, if you want a change of scene
