Hawaiians call it “moana” or “kai.” Our islands are surrounded and separated by it, yet it connects and allures people and cultures from every corner of the Earth.
If you haven’t guessed, we’re talking about the ocean — by far the most treasured assets in Hawaii. We want to declare that Hawaii’s oceans are the absolute #1 way to rejuvenate your mind, body and spirit, and here’s why:
The ocean brings people together
It makes no difference if you’re a lifetime kama’aina (local) or first-time visitor: it’s universally understood that the ocean (and beach) are the most popular gathering places in Hawaii.
For one thing, Hawaiian beaches are places of warmth and beauty and sensuality — the quintessential ideal of human well-being and comfort (it’s no coincidence that most vacation dreams involve a tropical beach).
The other great thing about Hawaii’s coastlines is that they’re open and accessible to everyone by law, which states:
The public has a right of access along the beaches and shorelines in the State situated below the “upper reaches of the wash of the waves.”
These statutes give a sense of equality and fairness when it comes to public ocean access. In other words: Hawaii’s beaches and ocean are meant for everyone to enjoy.
The ocean has healing power
Okay, we don’t happen to have the scientific research to prove this, but jumping in the ocean will make you feel better. Even if it’s for just a minute.
If you don’t believe us, try it.
Most people here agree there’s something truly magical about Hawaiian waters. They seem to dissolve whatever negativity or ickiness you might be feeling at the moment — be it a bad mood, hangover, a cold, etc.
Maybe it’s the perfect temperature (76-81 degrees), the salt or what some people describe as “negative ions.” Whatever it is, it works.
The ocean is the world’s greatest playground
Where do we even start on this one? There’s swimming, snorkeling, diving, jetskiing, sailing, fishing, boating, paddling — just to name a few.
When the waves are up, Hawaii’s ocean becomes one of the galaxy’s most thrilling places to be a surfer. In fact, Hawaiians have over a dozen words to describe breaking waves.
If you surf yourself or get to watch some surfing, it’s really cool to think that ancient Hawaiians pioneered this sport right where you’re standing (or surfing).

So there you have it — the ocean in Hawaii is the place to be. But don’t just take our word for it — jump in and experience the bliss for yourself!
