We’ll be honest: Maui gets more rain in the winter. Nothing too extreme, but you can always expect a handful of days when the sky sends down fresh showers to moisten the Earth and all of us below.
The nice thing about Maui rain is that it’s still warm outside and it never lasts long. And who ever said you can’t enjoy yourself? Check out our top nine rain-friendly activities on Maui:
Visit the Maui Ocean Center
The state-of-the-art Maui Ocean Center in Maalaea is an aquarium with an extraordinary view of Hawaii’s vast and beautiful undersea world. It’s only six miles from Kihei Bay Vista.
Visit the Tedeschi Winery
Tedeschi Winery in upcountry Ulupalakua has been making wine since 1974, making it Maui’s oldest and most famous winery. They offer tours and tastings of delectable sparkling, pineapple, grape & raspberry dessert wines.
Book a show
Maui puts on some pretty entertaining cultural and variety shows. Check out Ulalena (Hawaiian history), Warren and Annabelle’s (magic) or any of the eclectic events at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center.
Go shopping
Don’t think we forget about shopping! Your best best are the Shops at Wailea (casual and upscale) and the Lahaina Cannery Mall.
Love on some art
Take a meditative stroll and appreciate some art! You could try the Fine Art Gallery in Makawao (pictured above) and any of the galleries in Paia, Lahaina Town and Wailea. It won’t cost you a penny and you’ll discover some great boutiques along the way.
Get even more wet
Are you near a pool and hot tub? Enough said.
Watch a movie
Maui has movie theaters just like anywhere else. The two closest theaters to Sunny Maui Condos are at the Queen Kaahumanu Shopping Center or the Maui Mall Megaplex in Kahului.
Go on a submarine
The reviews are in and the Atlantis Submarine adventure is superb! The undersea adventure takes you under the coastal waters of Lahaina, where you’ll experience magic ocean life as well as the Carthaginian replica of a 19th century supply vessel.
Walk Front Street
Don’t let some rain stop you from strolling, perusing and discovering the wonders of Lahaina’s historic Front Street. Here you’ll find art galleries, boutiques and restaurants, plus local vendors and a 140 year old banyan tree that towers over almost an acre of downtown.
BONUS: The one thing NOT to do when it rains in Maui
Do not go in the ocean when it rains in Hawaii. The water gets stirred up and turns murky from land and river runoff, which attracts sharks and all kinds of unsavory bacteria. (You can read more about ocean safety in our guest binder.)
