7 shave ice places on Maui that’s worth the brainfreeze

Shave ice is a frozen treat made of “shaved” ice served as a ball and covered in yummy flavored syrups. What makes it uniquely Hawaiian is that the texture of the ice is actually shaved and not ground ice like snow cones, and the flavors are usually more exotic.

You may have already heard of Matsumoto’s Shave Ice in Haleiwa on Oahu’s North Shore, which put shave ice on the map. If you’re on Maui, don’t worry about Matsumoto’s — there’s excellent shave ice here, too.

Ululani’s Hawaiian Shave Ice

Try: pickled mango, lychee, passion fruit; some Yelpers say there is “no bad flavor here”
Tip: very popular spot so expect a line
