Picture yourself at 3,500 feet above sea level, breathing in the cool Upcountry air as you pick coffee cherries from trees swaying in the trade winds. Around you, the green slopes of Haleakala stretch down toward central Maui, where coastlines shimmer in the sunshine.
Welcome to Maui’s upcountry farm scene. Here, fertile volcanic soil and unique microclimates have made the island a gathering place for sustainable agriculture and farm-to-table experiences. Here are three farm tours that showcase the best of upcountry Maui:
O’o Farm: coffee meets cuisine

Nestled in Kula’s lush upcountry, O’o Farm covers eight acres of organic regenerative farmland that’s been supplying local restaurants with premium produce since 2000.
Founded by restaurateurs Louis Coulombe and Stephan Bel-Robert, who discovered the property while paragliding, O’o Farm offers two distinct experiences:
- The morning Coffee & Brunch tour runs from 8:30 to 11:30 AM and includes a bean-to-cup coffee experience paired with a gourmet breakfast.
- The Lunch tour from 10:30 AM to 1:30 PM takes you through the fields where you’ll harvest ingredients for your four-course meal.
The farm grows everything from artichokes and wild raspberries to olives and finger limes, crops you rarely see on other Hawaiian islands. During your tour, you’ll taste edible flowers, crush aromatic herbs between your fingers, and learn about regenerative farming practices that heal the soil rather than deplete it. Expect savvy dishes like herb-rubbed fresh fish with green purée, coffee cherry-rubbed chicken, and homemade chocolate truffles — all paired with estate-grown coffee.
Tours run Monday through Friday and advance reservations are required.

Maui Pineapple Tour: the gold standard

Pineapple has played a pivotal role in Hawaiian history and economy. By the early 1900s, Hawaii was producing over 80% of the world’s pineapple supply. Today, the Maui Pineapple Tour in Hāliʻimaile offers a rare behind-the-scenes look at one of Hawaii’s last remaining pineapple plantations.
This 1.5 to 2-hour experience is led by actual pineapple workers whose insights offer history, facts, and trivia into an authentic plantation experience. You’ll ride through the fields in an air-conditioned vehicle, observing different growth stages of pineapple while guides explain the cultivation techniques still done by hand.
The highlight? Tasting freshly cut, field-ripened Maui Gold pineapple. At the end, you get a free pineapple packaged for airline transport to take home.
Tours run daily at 9:30 AM, 11:45 AM, and 1:45 PM. For an elevated experience, consider the “Farm & Feast” option, which includes the tour followed by a four-course farm-to-table dinner at Hāliʻimaile General Store, complete with Maui Gold pineapple upside-down cake.

Maui Ku’ia Estate: bean-to-bar chocolate bliss

Your chocolate journey begins at the Ku’ia Estate Chocolate Factory in Lahaina, the largest chocolate factory in the state of Hawaii. From there, guides drive you to a private 20-acre cacao estate nestled in the foothills of the West Maui Mountains for an immersive “farm to bar” experience.
This interactive tour introduces you to cacao trees and hands-on harvesting techniques, finishing with an exclusive 9-piece tasting of award-winning chocolate in a custom treehouse overlooking the farm. The setting alone is worth the visit: imagine sampling rich, single-origin chocolate while pleasant tradewinds rustle through the cacao grove around you.
The 1.5 hour cacao farm tour runs daily. There’s also a new 90-minute “Chocolate Factory Experience,” where founder Dr. Gunars Valkirs personally guides guests through the production process, offering samples from intermediate stages not available for purchase.

Plan your upcountry adventure
Maui’s farm tours offer a chance to gain a deeper appreciation for the land and its people, whether you’re a foodie, gardener, or someone who’s genuinely curious about the farm-to-table scene on Maui.
Each tour requires advance reservations and involves walking on uneven terrain, so wear comfortable closed-toe shoes and dress in layers for the cooler upcountry temperatures. The tours typically aren’t ADA accessible due to the natural terrain, so contact operators directly if you have specific accessibility needs.
