Maui is one of the world’s most popular islands, but why? Let’s let these facts speak for themselves.
Well, for one thing:
Maui has repeatedly been voted best island in U.S. and the world
Like for 23 consecutive years!
Maui’s got 120 miles of accessible beach
That 81 beaches total, including 33 miles of swimming beaches— more than any of the other Hawaiian Islands.
Largest dormant volcano in the world? Haleakala
10,023 feet high with a summit depression of 21 miles across and 4,000 feet deep. Yeah, you could fit the island of Manhattan in there.
Rain vs. no rain
Dry: Lahaina and Kaanapali receive less than 10 inches of rain per year. Wet: Pu’u Kukui in the West Maui Mountains gets more than 365 inches.
Famous people?
Of course, it’s Maui. Oprah, Clint Eastwood (house pictured above), Steven Tyler, Owen Wilson, Willie Nelson, Woody Harrelson, Mick Fleetwood…
Everyone is allowed to access the beach
Sure, the millionaires (and billionaires) might have their homes on the coast, but that doesn’t mean you can’t waltz on the sand or rocks and jump in the cool blue Pacific Ocean out front. We have laws for that.
Billboards: nope
No matter how cute or clever a billboard might appear, it’s ugly and exists for one purpose: to get your attention so you buy something. Pretty much the last thing you want to see as you’re taking in the stunning natural beauty of Maui.
Pineapple power
Maui Gold Brand pineapples are not only heavenly delicious, they’re also bursting with triple the vitamin C as other pineapples. Must be that Maui soil.
Charles Lindbergh chose Maui as the most peaceful, beautiful place he’d ever been
The famous aviator known as “The Lone Eagle” asked to be buried under a plum tree at the Palapala Ho’omau Church on the famous road to Hana.
We have an old, huge, famous banyan tree
“The” banyan tree in Lahaina came from India 130 years ago when it was a wee 8 feet tall. Now it’s over 60 feet tall and the size of full city block, offering almost an acre of shade.
The ultimate Hawaiian view?
On a clear day from the top of Haleakala, you can see the islands of Hawai’i, Moloka’i, Lanai, Kaho’olawe, O’ahu and the islet of Molokini.
At one time in history…
Moloka’i, Maui, Lana’i, Kaho’olawe and Molokini were one large island, which might explain why the County of Maui includes all those islands.
